Race camshaft! Needs free flowing exhaust manifold and system, high CR. Mid- and top-end power only. Gives very good results when twin SU's have to be used. Rev range 3,250-8,000/8,500RPM dependent on build. If you've done your reading, then you know that "Scatter Pattern" cams are designed specifically for the peculiarities of the A-Series engine with it's five-port head. By optimizing lobe centers and phasing for each cylinder, improvements have been made in torque and bottom end power. The result is much better driveability in a very high performance cam. These Kent cams are sold outright, no exchange.
The high performance camshaft has been specially cross-drilled for improved oil flow and longer life.
When used in Sprites, Midgets, and Morris Minors a slot drive oil pump is required.

HI have a fast road cam on my 1275 mini and I would like to know What is the correct ignition timing Figure for this cam profile.
Answer:
With the use of an adjustable timing light, run the car at 3,500 rpm, set the adj timing light to 29 degrees, the top deed center mark on the pulley or flywheel should now be visible. You have now set your car for a total advance of 29 degrees.

Excellent urban cam, pulls from very low down, increases low, mid and top end in nearly all engines. Smooth idle, and good economy. Rev band up to 6,000 rpm.
This Kent 256 slot-drive, reground cam is a modern equivalent to the Cooper S cam, with 254 duration and .320 lift.
There is no faster way to wreck a new cam than to use it with old lifters. For new lifters see 2A13 (stock 46.1g), AEG548 (46.5g with oil hole), C-AEG579 (40g, oil hole). See MDM256/KIT for the whole kit and.... lifters, springs and lube.

Many cam profiles have been tried over the years but the famous old "649" grind is still considered the best overall! It's a 300 degree duration cam with a valve lift of .470 when used with high lift rockers (.4" with stock)! This profile works great in everything from 948 to 1275cc motors. Todays standards would call this a mild race for a 1275cc, but a super cam for a 948cc. This is "slot drive". Timing: Intake Opens 43°BTDC, Closes 64°ATDC, Exhaust Opens 61°BBDC, Closes 40°ATDC. Lift with std ratio rockers is .323", cold clearance .016".
When used in Sprites, Midgets, and Morris Minors a slot drive oil pump is required.

"Scatter Pattern" cams were designed by David Vizard to work best with the pecularities of the A-Series' siamese intake ports. The 310 scatter pattern is the ultimate race cam. Needs fully prepared engine for good results - high CR, high flow head, exhaust manifold and system. 310 duration and .420 lift Lobe center is 106 degrees. The high performance camshaft has been specially cross-drilled for improved oil flow and longer life
Advancing the cam timing moves the valve opening and closing events earlier in the cycle. Since the relationship between the intake and exhaust lobes cannot be changed, advancing or retarding a cam affects both the intake and exhaust valve equally. Also, the most important thing advancing or retarding a camshaft affects for engine power is when it closes the intake valve. For example, if the camshaft is advanced, the intake valve closes sooner. This typically increases cranking compression on a high-duration race cam. The result is more torque and power in the lower rpm ranges. But as the rpms increase, the velocity of the air/fuel charge in the intake ports also increases dramatically and the early intake valve closing hurts power.
When used in Sprites, Midgets, and Morris Minors a slot drive oil pump is required.

Hottest road usable cam. Not a good traffic cam. Lumpy idle. Not very suitable for small bore units unless fully prepared with big valve head. Very strong mid and top end power. Rev range 2,000 - 7,500 rpm. When used in Sprites, Midgets, and Morris Minors a slot drive oil pump is required.

I bought a Spridget race car. The documentation says this is a fairly wild cam built for 5000-9000 rpms. Cam has an end stamp that says 4D 73. I'm thinking it may be a good idea to take a step down to something a bit less radical until I can get to know the car and learn how to drive it.
The car was built for SCCA racing, but I want to do track days, and eventually race it vintage.
What do you recommend?
Answer:
While I am not familiar with the designation on your cam if you are right about the 5 to 9K rpm band I can agree with your concerns. Bearing in mind that a camshaft is only one part of the system that generates power. Typically a cam has to be complemented with the correct jetting, exhaust system, etc. I would think a good starting point would be a camshaft such as the Kent Cam MD286. This cam will perform well from 2K to 7.5K. If your motor was designed for a 9K cam it could be made to work very well. Both ignition and fuel ration will probably need tweaking and the absolute best option is to find a local Dyno shop that will let you dial in the best of it all. Building an engine is very much like most things in life- the more attention to detail you give an effort the more likely you will get the results you were looking for. Whether you are installing a new stock or performance camshaft or even simply rebuilding your motor with the stock camshaft getting the valve timing correct is one of the more important things that you can do.
Choosing The Right Timing Set For Your Engine with an quick review of timing chain tensioners. Camshaft selection can be as complicated as you like, but for the ultimate performance, even if that means best gas mileage, the decision requires that you consider the entire envelope that the camshaft will work within.
Understanding how to set your camshaft timing is a fundamental necessity when working on your Classic Mini Cooper. Learn from the experts at Mini Mania the basic and beyond.
