Factory oil recommendations may change over time.  Although we do our best to provide the most up-to-date information, always check with the factory for the current recommendations.

For Gen 1 (R50/52/53), 2002-2006 Hardtop and 2005-2008 Convertibles, the Factory approves FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 5W-30 (recommended) and 5W-40, API SM.

For the Gen 2 (R55/56/57/58/59/60/61) 2007-2015 MINI Models, approved oils are FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40, 5W-30 (recommended). API SM or higher, ACEA A3/B4.

For the Gen 2 (R60/61) 2016 Countryman and Paceman Models, the Factory recommends 0W-30 API SM or higher.

For Gen 3 (F56/F55) 2014-2015 models, factory recommends FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40, and SAE 5W-30 (recommended), 5W20. Approved oil types include BMW Longlife-01 FE, BMW Longlife-14 FE+, BMW Longlife-17 FE+, API SL or superior grade specification.

For Gen 3 (F56/F55/F57/F54/F60) 2016-2017models, factory recommends FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 0W-20 (recommended), 0W-30, SAE 5W-20, SAE 5W-30, SAE0W-40 or 5W-40. Approved oil types include BMW Longlife-01 and BMW Longlife-01 FE, API SL or superior grade specification.  2018-2019 models, factory recommends FULL SYNTHETIC SAE 0W-20 (recommended) or 0W-30. Approved oil types include BMW Longlife-01 FE and BMW Longlife-14 FE+, API SL, SM or SN grade specification.

TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

For Gen 1 (R50/52/53) model:

• Oil Filter Housing to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb)
• Oil Pan Drain plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb)

To reset the oil change interval in your MINI, see oil service reset.

For Gen 2 (R55/56/57/60) models:

• Oil filter cannister to 25Nm or 18 lb-ft
• Oil Pan Drain plug to 30Nm or 22 lb-ft

Drain plug can be 8mm Allen or T-50 Torx. To reset the oil change interval in your MINI, see oil service reset. (If your MINI is still under the free factory maintenance program, don't reset the interval.)

For Gen3 (F54/55/56/57) models:

• Oil Filter Housing 25Nm or 18.4 ft-lbs
• Filter Housing Oil Drain Plug 5NM or 3.7 ft-lbs or 44.5 INCH-lbs
• Oil Pan Drain Plug 20Nm or 14.8 ft-lbs

Start the engine and check for oil pressure. Don't forget to check for leaks too!

It helps if you 'loosen' the oil filter cannister while you drain the oil to allow the oil to drain out of the filter. You will spill less oil this way. (Gen3 oil filter housing has a drain plug for draining oil from the filter)

Before you press the filter into the cannister cover, press it into the filter base 'all the way' and remove to prep the filter for proper seating. Now you can press filter into the cannister cover and install.

Remember to use the new O-ring on the cannister cover - LIBERALLY coat the new o-ring with clean oil so it doesn't bind. Start the cannister cover by hand to avoid cross-threading.

Most engine wear occurs during the first couple of minutes after a cold start and fast flowing oil protects sooner; it also allows the engine to crank faster so it can start more quickly.
