This rear-mounted carrier is made for two bicycles and has a folding supporting clamp with individual removable, freely positioning retaining arms. The system is fitted via two towing threads which are provided on MINI's with strong>factory option S3ARA (Rear Bike Rack Preparation).

The alternatives are the 'hatch mount' bike rack, or you can install a hitch and use the hitch mount bike racks.

I've never used a tandem bike so I'm not familiar with using them on a rack, some bike frame styles don't work well with racks that use the top tube to secure them - so that may be a concern depending on your design. The Hitch Mount gives you the most options and supports up to 200lbs.
We suggest the hitch be installed by someone familiar with MINIs because you will have to remove the bumper, which means taillights, wheel arches, and such have to come off. I have had customers tell me their MINI dealer refused to install thee since they aren't factory original - every dealer is different, But call to them should give you an idea.

The installation instructions for the bike rack will be included with the product.
Instructions for the rear bumper luggage carrier are not available, but any qualified body shop that specializes in European cars - preferably one familiar with MINI's or BMW's should be able to install it. It involves removing the rear bumper cover to expose the bumper frame, which is swapped for the new one.

253 - Outer/lower support frame rests on the lower portion of the license plate or well. When bikes are loaded, re-tension straps to ensure base pads only make contact with the vertical surface of the well or plate.
271 - Yakima trunk mounted racks will not work with some optional spoilers.
275 - Do not use rear wiper when carrier is installed.
279 - Route top strap underneath rear spoiler on some vehicles.
285 - Yakima trunk mounted racks weight limit for 2 bikes is 60 lbs. / 3 bikes is 90 lbs.
291 - For this vehicle; Yakima Halfback, Fullback, and Hangout products require that the upper and lower hooks must be changed and installed in anchor mode. See instructions for anchor mode implementation.
292 - The headliner and or trunk liner on this vehicle may deform or be damaged under prolonged contact with this rack in anchor mode. Yakima Halfback, Fullback, and Hangout products require this rack installed in anchor mode.
Technical Notes
Mini Hardtops come with 3 different Spoiler/ options: -The "Cooper" trim level spoiler does not have a pronounced lip and is OK . -The "Cooper S" and "John Cooper Works" trim level spoiler has a Pronounced lip and is not recommended due to the large amount of deflection that occurs around the hatch seam. There is an optional spoiler with a wing that is OK as long as you route the top straps under the wing and not over it.
