I just picked up a Classic Austin Mini. It title says 1969 but when I look up parts they don’t seem to match up. I feel like I have a newer engine. My question is I currently have a 59D Lucas dizzy with vacuum advance. It has points. I’m very familiar with static timing l, strobe and dwells. Well last week I took my distributor completely apart. I noticed that one of the springs for for one of the weights on the mechanical advance is loose. So by starting it it’s already advancing it. People keep saying I should go electronic vs points. I like points because it’s easy to diagnose an issue. If an electronic unit goes bad then it’s harder to diagnose. I would like to get rid of the vacuum advance all together and just run mechanical advance like an old 009 dizzy.
Can you recommend a good reliable dizzy for me?
I was thinking of going with a mechanical distributor. I feel like they have probably gotten better over the years. The last one I got was 12 years ago for my 68 bug. It just went in place of the points. It was a empe product and wasn’t the best.Â

Also my Mini has a new wire harness. Im not sure if there should be a ballast resistor between distributor? I know on my boat totally different engine ford 302. But I can only have 9v going to ttr distributor or it will burn up my coil.Â

Yes, many Minis in the US are "back-titled" to appear older than they are to get around smog rules. A 59D was an A+ distributor and not used in 1969. But no worries, we sell the springs and the points for those distributors.
We have a spring set for the early distributors but not the later ones. You may want to contact Jeff Schlemmer at Advanced Distributors and see if he carries those springs.
These generally require a coil that's rated at 3 OHMs. Or I suppose a lower resistance coil with a ballast - but I would recommend a new 3 Ohm coil.
These use a magnetic pick up and they're polarity specific (don't cross the wires when hooking up or it will kill the distributor) so confirm that your car is negative ground (it should be as all later Minis were).

The vacuum is designed to retard the timing under heavy load thus decreasing the chance of detonation. These units are guaranteed to out-perform your old tired version. The best test is to put a timing light on your car and watch as timing marks on the flywheel dance and bounce around as the engine changes speed, etc. Install a new distributor and try it again!! All the bounce will never go completely away as long as you are driving the distributor through a timing chain gear set to the crankshaft. Timing is ideally set by the crankshaft and thus unless you setup a "crank-fire ignition" some bounce will always be present! As little as possible is the best we can hope for!

Does this distributor have a flat drive key (offset), on the bottom of the driveshaft? I can only see a round lower part of the shaft. It's for a 1975 Mini 1000 non-vacuum distributor, that we want to upgrade to electronic.

That's a pre-A+ type, likely it will fit your Mini if the engine isn't a later replacement. The A+ types didn't come around until later.

Can this be used on an Austin Healey sprite with a 948cc motor with a scatter pattern APT cam of 296 degrees semi race motor?
Having a problem with fouling at low rpm on a non-vacuum advance distributor. Hard to get it to run well at the high end without fouling at the low end. The car has a relatively high compression motor that really only makes power above 3500 rpm. Dual SU H2 carburetors were recently rebuilt. Running a stock distributor with Pertronix and deleted vacuum advance. Has a header and will check runner size. It’s a race car that had work done before I bought it. Tends to carbon foul plugs at idle or partially off idle In first gear. If gets rev up over 3500 will clear but still have low-end stumble. Used to run a AN jet but was replaced on rebuild with one step richer needle.

The C-27H7699 should work with your setup. It reads as though the curve is already set for a range that would be good with your cam. I would like to suggest the thought that your problem does not sound like a distributor problem. It sounds more to me like a Carb, fuel mixture issue. A 296 cam is pretty radical for a 948cc motor. A low end stumble is not out of the ordinary with a 296 in a street car. While most of the time it can be minimized if you have access to a dyno. I might suggest you recheck the camshaft timing. A typical 296 has a lobe center of 106 degrees. Advancing the cam timing to 102 would improve the bottom end performance while degrading HP/Torque at the 6,000 & above RPM range. Most people with such a cam are using a Weber that allows for some pretty finite changes. It will be pretty difficult to guess at a SU needle that might be better. If you don't have access to a dyno there are any number of air/fuel ratio gauges on the market. I suspect you are simply running too rich at the bottom and lean at the top but this is all speculation unless you same a measure of it.

To maximize power and economy potential from any engine, burning the compressed fuel/air mixture at precisely the right point throughout the engines entire rpm range is essential. This ‘point’ is generally somewhere before the piston reaches TDC on its power stroke described in degrees - i.e. 10 degrees BTDC.
