In the history of the Mini the drive to keep the product alive and marketable meant the factory decided to modernize the fuel system of the Mini from Carb to Fuel Injection. Thus in 1991 the first FI was installed on the Mini. Know as Single Point Injected or SPi for short, the system also incorporated its first ECU into the car. This version of the Mini was produced until late '96 when it was changed to the Twin Point or Multi Point injected version. The SPi Mini might have achieved the objective of better fuel economy and emissions control, but the loss of performance and reliability still plagues the life of the SPi Mini. In addition the SPi Mini is very difficult at best to upgrade to get any significant performance enhancements.

Thankfully the best solution is still very practical: convert the car back to a single 1 3/4" SU carb and eliminate the ECU. This opens up the entire universe of performance enhancements and upgrades that have been developed so successfully over the years.

The basic elements of the conversion process are simple enough: Remove the entire FI assembly and ECU, install a conventional 1 3/4" HIF series carb and manifold, replace the ECU with a simple relay, install a fuel pressure regulator and replace the distributor. Wire and plumb all of this together and you have it! Wiring and plumbing diagrams are provided in the kit.
Included in the kit are: 12-803 - Fuel Pressure Regulator A+  - Distributor PSD10 - Carb Spacer 22A152 - Stud, carb to manifold 2A3005 - carb abutment bracket 88g429 - carb gasket AJM601 - intake/exhaust manifold gasket AR201 - Relay C-AHT771 - Intake manifold CZK6491 - choke cable clip Fitting01 - 3/8X3/8 brass fittings Fitting02 - 5/16X3/8 brass fittings Fitting03 - 5/16X3/8 fitting with .100" hole FZX1280/rebuilt- HIF6/44 Carb SBB10126 - throttle cable SD40 - K&N Air Filter-SBF1001 Choke Cable

The temperature gauge is no longer used with this conversion kit.

Question:
Do you have this in dual-carb option? My car is a 94 rover mini spi from japan.
Answer:
We do not offer it as a kit, but I could put it all together with either a duel HS2 or HS4 carb set up. You might give us a call and I can work up a bid.

Question:
I have read various recommendations for oil for a classic auto mini. What oil would you recommend? How much would it cost to send the carb conversion kit to Scotland? And how long would delivery take? Could you recommend tuning parts for an SPI auto?
Answer:
Here is the link to the SPI conv. kit  https://www.minimania.com/part/MMKT0404/Classic-Austin-Mini-Spi-Fuel-Injection-To-Hif-Su-Carb-Conversion
This would be a good upgrade giving you a boost in performance.  We do the carb rebuilds and can have a kit ready to go in apx. 1 week or less.
Not sure about the automatic, if you will need a kick-down lever or if it uses one.
We also offer a stage kit  https://www.minimania.com/part/C-STN20/Classic-Austin-Mini-Stage-1-Kit-Single-Point-Injected-Spi
The oil is the same  20w 50.

Question:
I have a 1993 Mini SPI (Japanese version). It never ran great since I bought it at auction last year. Recently I replaced all vacuum hoses, stage 3 cylinder head, 1.5 roller rockers, header and lambda sensor, among other things. It runs better but idles at 1400rpm. I also think it runs a bit rich. There are some ideas on the Internet such as the stepper motor. But I hear the stepper operate when I shut the engine. Mike
Answer:
Hi,
We do not offer much on the SPI Classic Minis and not much info on them either.  We do offer a conversion kit if that is something you might be interested in.

Question:
I bought a 92 Rover Mini (MK VI) that has had the conversion kit completed on it. I noticed in the description that it mentions the temperature gauge is no longer used. Is there another kit or part that is needed to have the gauge work? I have noticed on my engine black that there is a hole where one should go, but it is blocked off.
Answer:
You have 2 options for installing a sending unit,  Drill the block, or use a thermostat housing with a port,  https://www.minimania.com/part/PEQ10010/Classic-Austin-Mini-Thermostat-Housing-For-Hif38-Carb-Late-Model-Car this is the part #. You can drill the port to the size you have.

Question:
Is this still the same conversion process for 94 SPI Rover Mini?
Answer:
Yes, it is.

Carburetors Installation of HIF6 or HIF44 Carburetors
Created: January 29, 2000
The HIF-series carburetor differs from the HF-series primarily in: 1) The design and location of the float chamber, which has been incorporated in the body of the carburetor, and 2) The introduction of temperature-sensitive mixture control to compensate for varying fuel densities resulting from changes in fuel temperature.
