We traveled to Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on Thursday, October 4, so we could take advantage of the Friday morning practice. Floyd Harper, the suspension guru from Black Art Design had spent a lot of time the previous week adjusting the suspension on Snoopy and corrected as best as possible the caster, camber, tracking, ride height, and shock settings.

Doing Hallett Raceway backwards in a Mini Cooper Hallett has over 80 feet of elevation change and is considered Technically Difficult. It has wide, grassy run-off areas and zero concrete or Armco barriers. Hallett is unique in that it can be run in either clockwise or counter-clockwise directions ­ making it two completely different race courses.

The historic races at Laguna Seca, Monterey, in California, are considered the ultimate event of its kind held in the USA. This year’s featured marque was Cooper and, much to the delight of the crowds, you cannot honour Cooper without acknowledging the Mini, so seven Cooper S were entered in the feature race.

The rally will be restricted to microcars only; no larger vehicles are eligible to enter. We can no longer always justify large vehicles and the time is right to look seriously at modern microcars to save our resources in an increasingly crowded world.
