About The "Ultimate Street Performance Engine"

Engine blocks are cleaned, magnafluxed, bored and painted. The oil passages are thoroughly cleaned, removing and re-tapping all the factory "lead" plugs, and replacing with threaded hex plugs. The cylinder head is one of our large valve cast iron heads and has hardened valve seats for use with unleaded fuels. It has ample room to modify for very large valves. The casting has the valves further appart than any stock casting, making it ideal for big-bore applications. We use squeeze cast Powermax 73.5mm pistons, which are specifically designed for this application. Elgin supplies the custom ground camshaft, which is driven by a new timing chain and gears. Elgin Cams supplies the custom ground camshaft.

We sell these engines ready to bolt in and run, which means, of course, that they are already mated with transmissions. These late model rod change transmissions are also fully rebuilt with a 3.44 final drive (upgrade kits to install these in earlier model cars are available at a small added cost) or a remote shift box can be used (extra cost). Flywheel and clutch assemblies are all in place.

The Classic Mini Cooper cylinder head is one of our special Aluminum heads, which is not only cast ported, but has hardened valve seats for use with unleaded fuels. The Mini motor uses Evo  9cc dished pistons, which are specifically designed for this application. Elgin supplies the custom ground camshaft, which is driven by a new timing chain and gears.

The built Classic Mini engine is mated with a gearbox, with flywheel and clutch assemblies all in place. These late model Mini Cooper rod change transmissions are also fully rebuilt and painted, and in the base configuration are assembled with a 3.44 final drive.

Optional kits to install the power-unit in earlier model Classic Mini Coopers are available. An optional remote shift box can be equipped too.

Ask any group of Classic Minis enthusiasts what feature they wished their Mini had, and one of the top answers will be "a FIFTH gear"!  This is particularly true when the car has a nice big torquey engine like one of our 1380cc custom-built powerunits.  We have built literally hundreds of these over the years, but only a special few have been equipped with one of the aftermarket 5-speed gearboxes.

In recent years, the five speeds have been produced in small numbers a few at a time, so not uncommon to find yourself on a waiting list. We at Mini Mania know this so when we want one, we often try to order two! 

At least one of them is going to help make up a 'dream engine' package, coupled with one of our 1380 HP A+ Engines. The 5-speed is configured to match the original 60s Cooper S close ratio gear box, but with a fifth gear overdrive that lets you and your Mini relax on a modern highway. This eliminates the compromise that MUST be made with a 4-speed - Do I want a high-revving engine on the highway, or do I want to burn my clutch getting the car moving?

This engine package will out-perform the fire-breathing original Cooper S while matching its fun to drive point and shoot, nimble handling manners that humble far higher spec competition to this day. Your Mini will jump off the line with authority, each gear perfectly placed for the engine powerband. But when you're not auto-crossing, or enjoying your favorite winding road, you can put this one in fifth and actually take it somewhere!

* A+ Block fully prepped and off-set bored to 1380cc
* 10.5 to 1 compression Evo 9cc dish  pistons
* Reground A+ crank with +.010" or +.020" bearings
* Resized A+ rods with ARP rod bolts
* Elgin Street performance cam with matching oil pump
* Aluminum cylinder head with quality valves, springs, and bronze guides
* ARP head stud kit. Block modified for 11 studs. New hardware and fasteners as required throughout
* HIF44 Carb with BDK needle, complete with all mounting brackets, cables, intake manifold, and K&N filter
* Standard Maniflow LCB header to work with intake kit
* Helical cut close ratio 5-speed overdrive with cross pin differential and 3.44 final drive.(equivalent to about a  3.05 : 1 final drive 4-speed in overdrive 5th)  Rod change shift linkage only. Kit available to upgrade earlier cars
* Electronic A+ Distributor and 8mm Plug Wires

What is the Hp output on your performance 1380 engine
Answer:
We don't have a set Hp for any of our engines but even the lowest spec 1380 is likely around 90 Hp - really built 1380's only go up from there.

Question:
Hello, It is time for a new engine and gearbox. I am looking for a relatively quick street, but a street motor. It needs to be torquey not peaky, and reliability is a priority. The 1380 seems a good option. I am considering the 5-speed you offer, but want to know more. Is this a jack knight purpose built 5-speed case, or a welded up modified four speed case? Will it shift smooth like stock? Is it as strong and reliable as a stock gearbox? Thanks!
Answer:
Thanks for asking.  The 5 speed used in our street 1380 are Helical cuts gears with very similar ratios to original 4 speed but with an overdivre 5th gear,  The case is a stock case with newly designed end housing that supports the 5th gear and added bearing,  The 5 speed is only available with a rod change linkage, The rod change linkage is felt by all that have experienced older designs to be the smoothest to ship.

These gearboxes have been available for a good many years and have in fact proven to be just as reliable as original ones.

FOLLOW UP QUESTION: Ok thanks. I think mine is a remote linkage, currently, but I guess that’s easy to change if you buy a rod shift gearbox with the 1380. What RPM at 75 mph with the 5 speed box? I understand it is 3.4 FD and the 5th gear equates to around 3.0. What kind of HP do you get from a street tuned 1380? Any issues with heat with the bigger engine? Any concerns with the landing between 2-3 cylinders? My 1275 S block is bored to 1310 and appears to have several crack repairs in that spot?

I know I have taken pains to explain that you don't have to have a 1380cc with very sporty cam profile and so on to have a decent, satisfyingly quick road car - but this reliability problem is absolute hogwash.
